Queen Elizabeth made ‘remarkable’ gesture that broke strict royal protocol for Princess Diana

It was considered a historic first for the late monarch, who ᴅɪᴇᴅ two years ago this week.

Britain commended Queen Elizabeth for breaking royal tradition to pay tribute to Princess Diana after she ᴅɪᴇᴅ.

As the two-year anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s ᴘᴀssɪɴɢ approaches, many are remembering the lovely gestures she performed.

The modern-day Royals are no strangers to breaching official protocol, and Queen Elizabeth was especially known for breaking/changing rules whenever she found a chance to do so.

After all, during her reign, the rules were amended to remove the bias for male heirs to the throne.

Prior to this, daughters could only inherit if there were no sons.

Following Princess Diana’s ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ in August 1997, the late Queen Elizabeth II breached stringent royal protocol.

A TikTok user known as @royalnewsdaily shared with viewers one of the most memorable cases of the late Queen breaking convention.

The TikToker explained: “As the days went by after Diana died, Buckingham Palace was dead silent. Queen Elizabeth didn’t make an official statement and the flag wasn’t lowered in grief.

“But everyone in Britain and the rest of the world was in grief. It was natural to feel the pain and dissatisfaction of the people, and because of this, Queen Elizabeth felt she had to break the rules and do something that had never been done before.”

They continued: “Diana was buried with all the honours that a Princess should have. The most moving moment, though, was when Diana’s coffin passed in front of Buckingham Palace.

“Queen Elizabeth did something that no one saw coming – she slightly tilted her head to show that she recognised [Diana] for one last time.”

Footage from the event shows the Queen, who was standing alongside Princess Margaret, bending her head in public as Diana’s coffin passed by.

This is considered the monarch’s first and only bow.

The TikToker continued: “This meant that the Queen broke one of the most important rules which indicates she should never bow her head to someone lower in rank than her. The Queen showed in this moment that she deeply understood how people in Britain and around the world felt.”

Hundreds have subsequently responded to the news, with one TikTok user calling it a’remarkable’ move.
